Sway with SAMLARC at Hot Havana Nights

September 12, 2018

On September 22, 2018, join us at the Lago Santa Margarita Beach Club for an evening inspired by the sights, sounds, and flavors of Havana! We cannot wait to begin the fun, so here are a few sneak peeks of what is in store!

 Sights & Sounds

We welcome you to join us at the Lago Santa Margarita Beach Club, where SitaraSon’s Cuban and Latin grooves await. We hope you’ll join us for a dance – or two! Shy on the dancefloor? Don’t worry – we’ll begin the evening with a salsa dancing lesson from Sway Ballroom Dance so you can dance the night away! If you want to start practicing now, check out Sway’s Latin dance tutorials!

As you prepare for this mini-getaway, don’t forget to dress in your best Cuban-themed attire to join the fashion contest. Cuban clothing reflects influences from Spanish, African, and even French culture. The most recognizable piece of Cuban clothing may be the men’s Guayabera shirt. The shirt’s signature style includes light colors, intricate embroidery, small pleats, and two (or four!) pockets in front. According to local legend, the Guayabera shirt originated in the center of the island, near the river Yayabo. Over time, the mispronunciation of the river’s common name – Yayabera – led to the shirt’s new name: the Guayabera.

Flavors & Fun

Between dancing and relaxing, make sure to take time to sample savory, Cuban-inspired fare! Entertaining Events will offer tastes of dishes from Cuba such as arroz con pollo, plaintains, chorizo sliders, and more. The rich flavors of Cuba reflect hundreds of years of cultural influences from Spanish, African, Caribbean, and Taino traditions.

Stop by the sangria bar for a refreshing beverage. Our new mojito bar will offer delectable drinks for purchase, as well! A mojito is a Cuban highball that consists of white rum, sugar, lime juice, soda water, and mint. This popular summer drink traces its origins back to Cuba, and was one of Ernest Hemingway’s favorite drinks. Before heading back to the dance floor, don’t forget to stop by the Tasting Bar, featuring rum, tequila, and sotol from Hacienda de Chihuahua – a special variety of agave aged in French Oak cognac barrels.

A master torcedore (cigar roller) from El Cañito Cigars will demonstrate the art of hand-rolled cigars throughout the evening. El Cañito prides itself on using only high-quality, Cuban-seeded tobacco to ensure aromatic, flavorful smoke. Cuban cigars continue to remain one of the island’s leading exports, reflecting worldwide popularity. In fact, the phrase “close but no cigar” comes from the (outmoded) practice of giving away cigars as prizes in fairground games. While smoking is not permitted inside the Beach Club, the scents and arts of old Havana are sure to tickle the senses.

We hope you’ll join us on our excursion to Havana! This event is selling out quickly. Tickets may be purchased at the SAMLARC Business Office or by phone at 949-709-0013. As this event is for adults 21 years and older, proof of age and SAMLARC ID will be required. We hope to see you at Hot Havana Nights!
