We share beautiful natural spaces with all kinds of wildlife - and while rattlesnakes prefer to lounge in peace, it's important to exercise caution during this time of year. Before playing in the park, scan for snakes (particularly near bushes) and keep an eye on children. Snakes are most active during the morning and dusk/evening.
If you see a rattlesnake at a SAMLARC park, trail, field, or other location, follow these steps:
- Keep your distance. Slowly back away and keep children and pets out of striking distance (at least 10 feet away).
- Call MV Animal Services at 949-470-3045 and describe your location.
- Keep visual contact on the snake's location until Animal Services arrives. If you lose sight of the snake, Animal Services will not be able to search for it.
- If a person is bitten, call 911 immediately and help the person stay calm and still.
Rattlesnakes serve an important part of our local ecosystem - from rodent control to seed germination! As wildlife begins to wake up to warm weather, keeping an eye on creatures and kiddos helps keep our community safe!
