On Saturday, January 20th, SAMLARC hosted the very first Gardening Workshop of 2018 at the Lago Santa Margarita Beach Club! Kathie Wickham, a California Certified Nursery Professional and SAMLARC resident, led participants in creating beautiful hanging moss baskets!
Each gardener was given a wire basket, plenty of moss and a variety of beautiful spring flowers to decorate the basket. Kathie provided a helpful tutorial and visited each table to assist participants, bringing a non-toxic fertilizer to help the baskets continue to grow! Kathie encouraged each gardener to hang their basket (whether indoors or outside on a patio) where it will be exposed to sunlight for a period of the day, cautioning gardeners that their baskets could receive sun damage if left in direct sunlight throughout the entire day. She explained that the baskets will likely become fuller with greenery overtime, even if a few blank spaces currently remain!
To make your own hanging moss basket, follow these simple steps and review the photos above for assistance:
Pad the bottom of the basket with plenty of moss to provide a good foundation.
Begin to add flowers to the basket by scraping off excess dirt (not the roots!) and placing them in the basket in between the holes in the wiring. You can also bend the wire if necessary to fit the flowers in the basket.
When you have added a layer of flowers with the bud-side facing out of the basket to provide plenty of color, add another layer of moss on top of the flower roots in the middle of the basket to spread more green throughout.
Continue to add layers of flowers spaced evenly in the basket and fill in gaps with moss.
When you are finished, be sure to add plant fertilizer to encourage those little buds to grow!
Place the basket in an area where it will be exposed to sunlight for a period of the day without allowing it to be left in direct, harsh sunlight all day. Water it regularly and watch the progress of your basket as spring draws near! Your basket will likely continue to flower and spill out over the sides, creating a beautiful and eye-catching part of your garden or patio.
