Event Highlights from SAMLARC’s Gardening Workshop

On Saturday, April 14th, SAMLARC hosted a salsa-themed Gardening Workshop at the Lago Santa Margarita Beach Club! Kathie Wickham, a California Certified Nursery Professional and SAMLARC Resident, led participants in creating beautiful and practical salsa gardens!

Each gardener received a pot with appropriate drainage, rich potting soil, and small tomato, cilantro, and onion plants to complete the arrangement. Kathie instructed attendees how to properly care for their gardens using Miracle-Gro’s organic fertilizer and products like Sluggo to eliminate pesky bugs. Kathie also advised that the pots be placed in a location which guarantees 4-6 hours of sunlight per day. Guests were treated to a light breakfast and coffee while participating in the event and enjoyed salsa music to complete the theme!

To make your own salsa garden, follow these simple steps:

  1. Purchase a 10-12 inch pot with a drainage hole.

  2. Fill the pot with a high quality potting soil, leaving roughly 2 inches from the rim.

  3. Choose the plants you want featured in your garden! The Gardening Workshop participants used tomatoes, onions, and cilantro.

  4. Gently break up the roots of the plants so that they can develop a proper root system once planted.

  5. Create holes in the soil for each of the plants and place each one carefully within your pot, pushing them gently into the soil.

  6. Fill the pot with another inch of potting soil, and sprinkle an organic fertilizer on the garden.

  7. Make sure to water your garden immediately, and place it in an area with moderate daily sunlight! Within a few weeks, your new garden will provide the necessary ingredients for delicious pico de gallo – just in time for Cinco de Mayo!

Thank you to everyone who participated in this unique Gardening Workshop experience!
