Although we are all disappointed that the fireworks show ended early, this year’s July 4th Star Spangled Spectacular was still a success in many ways through the numerous events and activities offered to the SAMLARC community. Here is a recap. SAMLARC celebrated the country’s 241st birthday with a variety of fun and family-friendly patriotic themed events in recognition of the most significant day in America’s history and the contributions of many to maintain the amazing freedom we enjoy in the United States.
The holiday weekend kicked off with a Patriotic T-Shirt Painting event where families painted their own shirts to wear on the 4th! Pinot’s Palette in Rancho Santa Margarita created a beautiful painting of the Lake with fireworks for the attendees to paint. The attendance to this event was the highest yet with 64 children, adults and families getting creative and showing their American Pride!
The morning of the 4th began with the annual Bike and Trike Parade! More than 700 people joined the parade along the Lago Santa Margarita pathway, many in their patriotic wear, with bikes, trikes and scooters! Pedego in Rancho Santa Margarita was also in attendance with their decorated electric bikes. Uncle Sam led the parade on a Surrey Bike with Board President Robert Dickson and his family, giving out American Flags along the route. At the end of the parade, everyone received patriotic popsicles by the Amphitheater as children played and families caught up with one another.
The fun at the Lagoon was just beginning following the Bike and Trike Parade as DJ Jerry played party music throughout the Beach Club and conducted games for the children. Hundreds of children had fun in the sun with hoola hoop contests, limbo, sponge obstacles and more throughout the entire day at the Lagoon! As the sun moved toward sundown, the SAMLARC Board Members and Uncle Sam took the water by boat to launch 280 patriotic t-shirts to those around the Lakeshore! Children chased the boat hoping to be one of the lucky ones to catch a commemorative t-shirt. More than 1,000 American Flags were given away to Lake goers by Uncle Sam throughout the day.
Meanwhile, at the Amphitheater, The Bridge Church entertained the crowd with festive and lively pop and patriotic music. Ice cream and other treats were made available, keeping the crowd cool from the summer heat.
Once the sun went down, the show began! The winners of the “Voice” of SAMLARC singing competition wowed the crowd with their beautiful voices; Kristien Olsen regaled the crowd with God Bless America, Darlene and Dana Juat sang in harmony America the Beautiful, and the first place winner Lauren Leopard sang a powerful rendition of our National Anthem, the Star Spangled Banner.
The fireworks began at the end of Ms. Leopard’s performance in conjunction with the song lyrics, “And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air.” Each song was beautifully performed. The fireworks continued to soar across the sky beautifully for 6 minutes until the show was unfortunately cut short due to technical difficulties with the irrigation system.
Regardless of the early ending of Fireworks show, the day was a beautiful display of patriotism and the wonderful SAMLARC community coming together to celebrate America’s Independence and Freedom, as well as reflect on those who have contributed to and continue to sacrifice to keep our country’s freedom.
Thank you to all who attended and celebrated this beautiful holiday with us at the SAMLARC Star Spangled Spectacular!
