Did you feel a tropical breeze waft through Central Park last Friday night? It may have been from Moana’s adventure at Screen on the Green!
Over two thousand community members gathered under the palms of Central Park to picnic and participate in the fun. Lots of young SAMLARC members dressed like Moana – and we even met a HeiHei!
The night began with an amazing Polynesian dance performance by members of Mahana Dance Company – including traditional hula and fire poi ball performances. Afterward, participants learned a Moana-inspired hula to get into the island spirit!
The winners of the luau fashion contest and the Moana kids movie contest were announced just before the movie began. The Moana kids movie contest received lots of amazing entries from our young SAMLARC members! The winning entry was from Jasmine, who says:
I feel like Moana is the strongest female character in Disney, and she plays an active role in pursuing her dream. I love that at one point she does get discouraged, but her spirits are heightened again by the spirit of her grandmother. It shows that people are only human, but can do amazing things with the help of others.
The magic began as dusk set in! Kids donned complimentary glow-stick necklaces, bracelets, and headgear (and made some great artwork!) and settled in for Moana’s journey. Families sang and cheered alongside Moana, Maui, and their friends.
Plenty of snacks were available throughout the evening. SAMLARC provided fresh cotton candy and popcorn – whipped up on the spot by Jolly Jumps. Kurt’s Catering offered tasty American food favorites, the Street Foods Co. truck boasted an array of California cuisine in a vintage trolley, and Screamin’ Ice Cream brought lots of sweet ice cream treats in their signature school bus!
